e-commerceThe SD Association has a new ‘smart’ idea. New Micro SD cards, popular for use in  Android smartphones and tablet devices, will soon be available. The new MicroSD  cards will carry the NFC Secure Element which allows Near Field Communications smartphones communicate with a chip on the Micro SD card. These are mainly used in a digital wallet for electronic transactions known as m-commerce. The new SD Cards also support on-board applets for smartphones as well.

Many newer phones are shipping with NFC Radios mainly used with digital wallets. For security, Near Field Communication requires a special authentication method prior to encrypted communications. Now that can be be placed on a Micro SD in addition to additional memory for the smartphone or tablet. The card can also store small digital wallet applications for digital payments when combined with an NFC enabled phone or tablet. These are seen by consumers as a way to ditch plastic cards in favor of digital wallets, and you can also transfer the electronic wallet to different devices as you please.

Additionally the SDA supports Micro SD cards that have both the Secure Element security chip on board as well as a Near Field Communications Radio on the chip to give NFC capabilities to devices that don’t come with the technology. Changing devices seems even easier with these cards as they enable NFC on multiple devices as the user transfers the card. If the MicroSD card owner switches cellular carriers, the card can easily go from the old phone to a new one and the digital wallet user never skips a beat.

The SD Association claims that microSD cards account for 95% of all mobile memory card shipments and that 78% of all mobile phone shipments today have the microSD memory card slot. With the latest round of MicroSD cards with NFC radios and without, they hope new e-commerce and m-commerce applications are built to run on the memory cards. This greatly levels the playing field from vendor lock in as both cell phone carriers and device makers have their own aspirations toward digital payment systems.

Data Breaches Cost Consumers Billions

Exposure of personal information is a new challenge in todays environment, the initial exposure being a nightmare to unravel. A Javelin Strategy and Research study shows that a single data security breach can cost Billions of dollars in consumer fraud losses. Data security breaches rose 48% from 2011 in 2012 to 1,611 data breaches. Identity theft is on the rise too.

Commenting at a shareholder meeting WalMart CEO Mike Duke expected WalMarts online e-commerce site to bring in $10 Billion in transactions this year.

India Sees Spike in e-commerce and Mobile Payment Investments.

India is seeing deeper saturation of broadband rollouts connecting personal computers and laptops online at a faster pace. Big names such as Intel are keen on India’s development for market opportunities. Merchant Customer ExchangeYet another payment solution on the horizon is the MCE initiative for smartphones and tablets. The new solution is being led by 7-eleven, BestBuy, CVS Pharmacy, Darden Restaurants, Lowes, Publix, Sears, Shell Oil, Sunoco, Target, Dunkin’ Donuts, Bed Bath & Beyond and WalMart. According to their website, “Development of the mobile application is underway, with an initial focus on a flexible solution that will offer merchants a customizable platform with the features and functionality needed to best meet consumers’ needs.” The company intends to make their application available on all major smartphone platforms.

This latest solution is a mobile wallet that has serious potential to change the way consumers fulfill their mobile payments. The mobile app links a customers smartphone directly to their bank account allowing merchants to accept non-cash payment without involving credit card processing fees.

Though this is a significant shift from other mobile digital wallet schemes, the biggest difference might be in Loyalty Card programs used to entice existing customers to stop and shop. The creative potential for these types of programs go well beyond gift card processing and extend to e-mail and social networking. Customers could receive special offers based on the word of mouth, social sharing they do for the large retailers.

This mobile payment solution is initially just for the big boys though. They are catering to their own needs currently and there is no future consideration for small to medium size business in their digital wallet. With how fast things change in the mobile payment industry, this too could change and usher in new currencies for universal digital wallet payments.

SmartphoneThe Pew states more than half of adults in the United States now own a smartphone. The cost of not having a smartphone these days outweighs the cost of having a smart phone device. Social networking drove the rise and new smartphone and tablet apps are set to explode.

The Pew’s smartphone ownership report states that 56% of American adults now carry a smartphone according to this weeks report. Ranking the highest so far in smartphone saturation previous numbers were at 46% last year and 35% two years ago. A major milestone indeed. More than one third have a cell phone that isn’t a smartphone and 9% that don’t own a smart phone nor a cell phone. Read more of this article »

m-commerceWith smartphone users on the rise Nielson says that in 2012 47% of smartphone owners use mobile shopping apps in the Shopping / Commerce category. Although these do not account for actual mobile payment transactions they show that smartphone users are frequently turning to their mobile devices to find deals and purchase information.

But what exactly is m-commerce? M-commerce is a hybrid technology that takes web technologies that scale screens to mobile devices like Apple iPads and Android tablets.
