To make a strong first impression on consumers, businesses need an impactful logo. Despite the importance of a logo, businesses with just a handful of employees often struggle to design a memorable one with their limited budgets. Fifteen percent of small businesses with five employees or less have no logo at all, with 56 percent of businesses having designed their own logos without any professional help.

A standout logo and impressive Web presence are important parts of building a brand even at the very early stages of building a business. The research revealed that more than a quarter of small businesses are planning on changing their logo in the next few months, and when thinking about logo design, it’s best to keep it simple.

Small business owners should choose a design that has staying power, but it’s important to be open to small iterations over time. Brands may need to refresh their logo as the company evolves, expands, and takes on new audiences just don’t lose sight of what makes your brand recognizable whether it’s a signature color or graphical element.

Here are some tips to help small businesses refresh their logo.

Ask your audience. Social media makes it easy to communicate directly with customers. Engage customers in the process by asking for input and even allowing them to judge potential designs.

Communicate the change. To avoid confusion, the refresh should be consistent at every touch point for customers. Ensure a seamless experience by communicating the change with employees and updating marketing materials.

Keep it simple. A complete brand overhaul may alienate customers, so less is more when it comes to a refresh. Focus on one or two elements and make subtle changes.

PCI DSS 3.0 standard, which took effect January 1st, introduces changes that extend across all 12 requirements, aimed to improve security of payment card data and reducing fraud. There will be some shakeups for many organizations when it comes to their day-to-day culture and operations. Transitioning to meet the new requirements will help e-business build a stronger, safer, lower-risk environment for their customers.

While the growing number of digital payment avenues offers convenience to customers, it also offers a larger attack surface for criminals.

As cloud technologies and e-commerce environments continue to grow, creating multiple points of access to cardholder data and online retailers will only become more appealing targets for hackers. Cybercriminals are cunning and determined. They understand payment card infrastructures as well as the engineers who designed them.

A scary proposition and it’s exactly why the payment card industry is so determined to help keep e-commerce organizations protected. Meeting the new standard, businesses will be better armed to fight evolving threats. Changes will also drive more consistency among assessors, help business reduce risk of compromise and create more transparent provider-customer relationships.

Transitioning to PCI DSS 3.0 will involve some work, but doing that work on the front end is going to save much work down the line. Adopting the new standard ultimately will drive your e-commerce business into a secure and efficient era.

Cultural Changes – One of the main themes of 3.0 is shifting from an annual compliance approach to embedding security in daily processes. Threats don’t change just once a year. They’re constantly evolving and that means e-commerce organizations must adopt a culture of vigilance. Only through a proactive business-as-usual approach to security can you achieve true DSS compliance. Realistically, this could mean the need to provide more education and build awareness with staff, partners and providers, so that everyone understands why and how new processes are in place.  

Operational Changes – The 3.0 standard addresses common vulnerabilities that probably will ring a bell with many of you. These include weak passwords and authentication procedures, as well as insufficient malware detection systems and vulnerability assessments, just to name a few. Depending on your current security controls program, this could mean you’ll need to step up in these areas by strengthening credential requirements, resolving self-detection challenges, testing and documenting your cardholder data environment and making other corrections.

Overview Changes – How much work lands on your plate will depend on your current security program. Examining your current security strategies and program is a good idea. Below are the areas requiring your attention, which this series will explore in more detail in future installments.

Service Provider Changes –  Some organizations made unsafe assumptions in the past when it comes to third-party providers. Some have paid the price, from failed audits to breaches. One reason that the new standard is designed to eliminate any confusion over compliance responsibilities. Responsibilities, specifically for management, operations, security and reporting all will need to be spelled out in detailed contracts. In addition to improved communication, an intensified focus on transparency means that you should have a clear view of your provider’s infrastructure, data storage and security controls, along with subcontractors that can impact your environment. So if your organization isn’t exactly clear on which PCI DSS requirements you manage and which ones your providers handle, prepare to get all of that hammered out.

The Compliance Rewards – The path to preparing for the 3.0 deadline in January 2015 sounds like it’s a lot of work. So to get started request your QSA’s opinion on how the changes will impact your organization, by doing the gap assessment and you’ll be able to address any shortcomings.

To succeed in customer service, a business must be customer-obsessed. Businesses should genuinely want to listen to their customers and provide the best service possible. But it’s even more important for businesses to differentiate themselves from the competition. Customers crave differentiation.

Tips for improving customer service:

Go beyond average. The baseline for service has been raised. Average is no longer good enough it’s forgettable. Ask customers specific questions about their experience, and listen for words like fine and okay that scream mediocrity, and then ask what you can do to make their next experience better.

Hire the right people. Building the right team from the start is vital to great customer service. Look for candidates who are the absolute best people for the job and who also genuinely care about providing great service.

Keep up with your competition. Business owners should keep their fingers on the pulse of the industry, to understand what their competitors are doing. They can then use that knowledge to do something more unique. Always network and look for opportunities to figure out how you can be a step ahead.

Merchant Cash Advance was originally structured as a lump sum payment to a business in exchange for an agreed upon percentage of future credit card and/or debit card sales.

Notion Merchant Cash Advance companies provide funds to businesses in exchange for a percentage of the businesses daily credit card income, directly from the processor that clears and settles the credit card payment. A company’s remittances are drawn from customers’ debit- and credit-card purchases on a daily basis until the obligation has been met. Most providers form partnerships with card-payment processors and take payments directly from a business owner’s card-swipe terminal.These Merchant Cash Advances are not loans – they are a sale of a portion of future credit and/or debit card sales. Therefore merchant cash advance companies claim that they are not bound by state usury laws which limit lenders from charging excessive interest rates. This technicality allows them to operate in a largely unregulated market and charge much higher interest rates than banks. This structure has some advantages over the structure of a conventional loan. Most importantly, payments to the merchant cash advance company fluctuate directly with the merchant’s sales volumes, giving the merchant greater flexibility with which to manage their cash flow, particularly during a slow season. Advances are processed quicker than a typical loan, giving borrowers quicker access to capital. Also, because MCA providers typically give more weight to the underlying performance of a business than the owner’s personal credit scores, Merchant Cash Advances offer an alternative to businesses who may not qualify for a conventional loan.

Usage Merchant cash advances are most often used by retail businesses that do not qualify for regular bank loans, and are generally more expensive than bank loans.  Competition and innovation led to downward pressure on rates and terms are now more closely correlated with an applicant’s FICO score.

Generally there are three different types of repayment methods for the business.

1. ACH (Automated Clearing House) Withholding: When structured as a sale, the finance company receives the credit card processing information and deducts its portion directly from the business’s checking account via ACH. When structured as a loan, the finance company debits a fixed amount daily regardless of business sales activity.

2. Lock Box or Trust Bank Account Withholding: All of the business’s credit card sales are deposited into bank account controlled by the finance company and then the agreed upon portion is forwarded onto the business via ACH (Automated Clearing House), EFT ( Electronic Funds Transfer) or wire. This is the least preferred method since it results in a one-day delay in the business receiving the proceeds of their credit card sales.

3. Split Withholding: When the credit card processing company automatically splits the credit card sales between the business and the finance company per the agreed portion (generally 10% to 22%). This is generally the most common and preferred method of collecting funds for both the clients and finance companies since it is seamless.

Opting for a merchant cash advance is a decision made by small business owners every day of the week across this country.  If you’re having a hard time establishing a business line of credit or getting approved for a business loan, a merchant cash advance may very well be the best option available to you to help you finance your business.

Here are reasons why a business cash advance makes sense.

A. Can take out more advances as advance is repaid

Most business loans will not be extended as you pay off your balance, but with a merchant cash advance, you can get more money as you pay off your advance.

Cash advances can give you the opportunity to receive more money than you would be able to borrow from a bank.

F. Gives you money right away

With a merchant cash advance you literally can have your cash in as little as 72 hours from your applications approval – and most businesses get their funding in less than a week.   Now that’s a simple process

G. New business friendly

Many small business loans require that you have a well-established business (2 years or more) to even consider you for business funding.  With a cash advance, you can receive funding even if your company is newly in business.

H. No personal liability for repayment of the cash advance

Much unlike with business lines of credit and small business loans, you are not personally responsible for repayment of the advancement.

I. Non-restrictive usage on what you use the funding for

 Too many times business owners are restricted by what they can do with their business loans.  But, because a cash advance is designed to help you improve your cash flow, you can use your new funds wherever your business needs them.

J. Qualification is easier than with traditional business loans

Banks have a lot of stipulations for businesses that they loan money to or extend credit lines – cash advances have minimal qualifications and high approval rates.
